US charging infrastructure
US charging infrastructure
The number of charging stations in the United States is lower than in Europe and South Korea, and their distribution is not evenly spread across the country. In comparison to some states, the availability of charging stations is not high in certain states. For example, California has almost the same number of charging stations as the 39 states with the fewest charging stations for electric vehicles.   1 Overall Situation of Public Charging Stations: According to data provided by the Alternative Fuels Data Center as of November 2023, the United States has a total of 59,605 public charging stations and 156,669 public charging outlets.   The majority of these charging outlets are Level 2 chargers, accounting for 76% of all public charging stations in the country. Fast chargers make up approximately 23% of the total, with a significant portion (63%) being Tesla Superchargers.   With the approval of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) formula plan by the government, the deployment speed is expected to accelerate in the coming years. Under the new standards, Tesla has announced its plan to open some of its Supercharger stations and Destination Charging stations to non-Tesla electric vehicles.     2 Overall Situation of Public Charging Stations by State: Nearly one-third of the country's public charging infrastructure is located in California. The state has the highest number of public charging stations with 42,059, significantly surpassing other regions in the United States.   New York ranks second, with less than a quarter of the number of public charging stations compared to California.   However, when considering the size of the states, Vermont emerges as the winner. Despite being much smaller in size compared to environmentally conscious California, Vermont has the highest number of electric vehicle charging stations per capita based on 2022 data. The state has 140 charging stations per 100,000 residents, followed by California (105) and Massachusetts (71).     3 Overall Situation of Public Charging Station Operators: In the realm of both Level 2 charging and DC fast charging, ChargePoint is far ahead as the largest charging station operator in the United States, holding a 39% market share of the public charging station market. Currently, ChargePoint operates 28,000 charging stations and over 52,000 charging outlets in the United States.   Tesla ranks second with a 21% market share, operating 5,800 charging stations and 28,000 charging outlets. Following closely are SemaConnect with a 4.9% market share, Blink with a 3.1% market share, Electrify America with a 2.9% market share, and EV Connect with a 2.1% market share. The remaining 13.4% of the market is allocated to smaller operators.   In the realm of DC fast charging, Tesla dominates the market, with its Supercharger stations accounting for 61.7% of the total in the United States. Electrify America ranks second with a 12.3% share, EVgo ranks third with an 8.2% share, ChargePoint ranks fourth with a 6.5% share, and the remaining 6% share belongs to other operators.

The British government invests 381 million pounds to build car charging facilities
The British government invests 381 million pounds to build car charging facilities
On March 18, local time, the UK government announced that it would continue to provide a £381 million local electric vehicle fund to build thousands of car charging facilities. The UK government stated that in order to further support electric vehicle drivers and households wishing to switch to electric vehicles, the government will ensure that families without dedicated parking spaces receive electric vehicle charging grants, making electric vehicles a more practical choice.   As a complementary measure, the UK government-funded electric vehicle infrastructure training courses will be launched. The course is open to all local authorities and covers key topics ranging from technology to procurement.   Edmund King, Co-Chair of the UK Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Forum, pointed out that one of the main reasons why many drivers hesitate to switch to electric vehicles is the perceived lack of charging stations. We need to overcome these barriers and bring a cleaner and more environmentally friendly driving experience to everyone.   Edmund King also stated that an increasing number of drivers are starting to transition to electric vehicles, with pure electric vehicles accounting for over 16% of the UK's new car market according to industry statistics in 2023.   Currently, the UK government and the industry are working hard to accelerate the installation speed of charging points.

The number of public charging stations worldwide is rapidly increasing.
The number of public charging stations worldwide is rapidly increasing.
By the end of 2022, there were a total of 2.7 million public charging stations globally, with over 900,000 installations in 2022 alone. This represents a 55% increase compared to 2021 and is comparable to the pre-pandemic growth rate of 50% between 2015 and 2019.   China, being the largest market for electric vehicles (EVs) and having a dense population, actively develops charging infrastructure with the support of policies. As a result, the majority of global charging stations are located in China, and over 40% of them are fast-charging stations, which is significantly higher than other regions.   In terms of charging infrastructure development, Europe ranks second after China, with a significant disparity between Eastern and Western Europe. South Korea has experienced rapid growth in the number of EV charging stations, ranking third globally. The United States has fewer charging stations compared to Europe and South Korea, but their distribution is not uniform. Nearly one-third of the public charging infrastructure in the country is located in California.   Typically, we use the standards proposed by the Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Directive (AFID) to assess a country's level of charging infrastructure. AFID recommends a target of 10 electric vehicles per public charging station, resulting in a ratio of 10:1, and each pure electric vehicle should be equipped with a 1 kW charging power.   As of 2022, the global average is 10 electric vehicles per charging station, with each electric vehicle having 2.4 kW charging power, meeting the recommended standards by AFID.   It is widely understood that the ratio of vehicles to charging stations indicates the number of stations available per vehicle. A lower ratio means a higher number of stations per vehicle, making charging more convenient for users. Countries such as China, South Korea, and the Netherlands have maintained a level below 10 vehicles per charging station in recent years. In countries heavily reliant on public charging, the growth rate of public charging stations aligns closely with the deployment rate of electric vehicles.   However, in markets characterized by widespread home charging (due to a higher proportion of single-family residences with the opportunity to install charging stations), many countries have not reached the recommended standards by AFID, and the number of electric vehicles per public charging station may be higher. For example, in the United States, there are 24 electric vehicles per charging station, while in Norway, it exceeds 30.   China's charging infrastructure level has surpassed the global average, with a ratio of 8 vehicles per charging station and an average charging power of 3.46 kW per vehicle.   In terms of charging power per electric vehicle, the European Union has a lower ratio, with an average of 1.18 kW per vehicle. South Korea has the highest ratio, with each electric vehicle having 6.95 kW charging power, even though the majority of public charging stations (90%) are slow-charging stations.

UK cancels battery storage VAT policy
UK cancels battery storage VAT policy
The British government shockedly announced that in order to further improve energy efficiency, it will cancel the 20% value-added tax on the installation of battery energy storage systems (BESS) from February 1, 2024.   This decision not only goes beyond the previous policy which was limited to batteries installed at the same time as solar panels, but also includes independent battery systems and later retrofitted battery systems, injecting new impetus into the UK's clean energy transition.   In the past, VAT relief was only available for battery storage systems installed at the same time as energy-saving materials (ESM) such as solar panels. Now, the introduction of new policies allows more households to upgrade their existing ESMs to battery storage systems, helping the British energy industry enter a new era.   Summary of policy points:   UK government expands tax breaks for late-stage battery storage installations in homes   From February 1, 2024, the UK government has eliminated the 20% value-added tax (VAT) on late-installed battery energy storage systems (BESS).   The decision goes beyond previous policy, where relief was limited to batteries installed at the same time as solar panels.   This latest decision gives homeowners looking to upgrade home energy storage the same tax benefits as installing energy-efficient materials such as heat pumps and rooftop solar.   Background and changes   Initially, from the Spring 2022 Statement, domestic equipment (such as heat pumps and rooftop solar) benefit from a 20% VAT reduction. While battery energy storage systems are included in this exemption, they are limited to installations with other energy-saving materials.   In recent announcements, the government has expanded the scope of VAT relief to include stand-alone battery installations and later-installed battery energy storage systems, no longer restricted to other energy-saving materials. This change enables more property owners to take advantage of the financial incentives for adopting battery energy storage systems.   The expanded VAT exemption further lowers the financial threshold for adopting battery energy storage systems, making it more accessible and affordable for property owners.   Industry associations have also called on the government to further expand the scope of tax breaks to include thermal energy storage and electric vehicle charging facilities.   With the introduction of policies, Britain's clean energy carnival moment is coming, laying a solid foundation for a greener and more sustainable future.
